Description
Position Summary:
The New York County District Attorney’s Office has an immediate opening for a Deputy Director of Analytics in its Strategic Planning and Policy Unit. Strategic Planning and Policy functions as the internal management consulting arm of the Office, overseeing data analysis, grants management, policy analysis, and management of the Criminal Justice Investment Initiative, a $250 million investment in crime prevention and criminal justice system reform projects. Reporting to the Director of Strategic Planning and Policy, the Deputy Director of Analytics, with wide latitude for independent judgment and initiative, will manage the Unit’s data work and the Office’s data transparency website, and oversee a team of data analysts who aggregate, analyze, and report on the Office’s datasets. This position requires a combination of superior technical and communication skills; the ideal candidate can perform rigorous analyses and deliver results to a non-technical audience. The ideal candidate will have expertise in statistical software, and will help the Office tread new ground in terms of analytical tools, methods, and techniques. 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Oversee the Unit’s data work, including the creation of analytic reports and dashboards that demonstrate the Office’s performance and outcomes using the internal business intelligence platform.
  • Oversee the maintenance and evolution of the Office’s data transparency website.
  • Triage and prioritize internal and external projects and requests for aggregated data and statistics.
  • Analyze data and manage projects to inform internal policies and procedures, such as the development of new prosecutorial strategies, diversion programs, or other Office practices.
  • Collaborate with the Office's Information Technology Department on infrastructure, tools, and policies.
  • Advance the Unit’s understanding and utilization of analytical tools, methods, and techniques, including identifying new use cases, piloting concepts, and implementing methods for using data to achieve Office goals.
  • Partner with outside agencies or entities such as research institutions or universities on data-driven projects.
  • Manage a team of 3-4 data analysts.
  • Use advanced techniques to answer Office or system-wide questions.
  • Liaise with executive staff and senior management on data-related projects and analyses.
  • Respond to ad hoc data requests from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Perform other related duties and tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Seven (7) or more years of relevant work experience, including experience working with complex datasets required.
  • Three (3) or more years in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • Expertise with at least one statistical software such as R or SAS, Python, or GIS.
  • Expertise with SQL Server or another RDBMS experience.
  • Interest in public policy and a desire to tackle complex issues, including public safety, justice, and equity.
  • Strong quantitative and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to perform under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience working in teams and collaborating on projects.
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Must be extremely detail-oriented, self-motivated, highly-organized, resourceful, and reliable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Educational Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Master’s degree in a closely related field (i.e. Statistics, Social Sciences, Political Science, Computer Science, or Criminal Justice) strongly preferred.
Preferred Requirements:
  • Microsoft Analysis Services or other OLAP experience.
  • Interest/professional experience in, or knowledge of, the criminal justice system.
Commitment:
  • A two (2) year commitment to the hiring unit.
