Description
Position Summary:
The New York County District Attorney's Office (DANY) has an opening for a Unit Coordinator in its Special Litigation Bureau. Special Litigation often serves as a consultant throughout DANY and the law enforcement community. In addition to the investigation and prosecution of homicides and other felony offenses, the bureau represents DANY in civil matters, including psychiatric litigation involving defendants found to be not responsible for their crimes as a result of a mental disease or defect. In this position, the Unit Coordinator is responsible for providing supervisory, administrative, and paralegal support to the Narcotics Eviction Program (NEP), the bureau, and DANY.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Locate and obtain Search Warrants and necessary documents including Vouchers, Lab Reports, Ballistics Reports, etc. for evaluation as its sufficiency to proceed with an NEP case.
  • Upload necessary documents to the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) SharePoint system.
  • Maintain contact with NYCHA to follow up on its Administrative cases.
  • Assist in drafting and filing all BAWDY-NEP Petitions in Housing Court and submit to the Sheriff’s Office for service.
  • Maintain communication with the NYPD Legal Bureau.
  • Work closely with DANY’s Community Partnerships Unit on any complaints, arrest or concerns from landlords.
  • Aid landlord attorneys with NEP and administrative proceedings.
  • Attend NYCHA and/or community meetings.
  • Supervise and oversee the staff on NEP cases.
  • Train paralegals on NEP cases.
  • Attend Housing Court NEP proceedings when cases are scheduled in Court.
  • Oversee the NEP court proceedings.
  • Maintain multiple bureau case tracking systems.
  • Appropriately address inquiries from outside agencies concerning the bureau’s various litigation practice areas.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of NCIC system.
  • Be familiar or aware of all paralegal work in progress; ensure that support staff have essential knowledge of pending matters both criminal and civil, and the support to complete the tasks at hand.
  • Perform miscellaneous administrative and paralegal duties as assigned, including providing coverage for Bureau Administrator when necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to supervise various levels of staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills required.
  • Ability to work independently with frequent interruptions, manage deadlines, and adapt to changes in workflow.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of staff, witnesses, defense attorneys, and law enforcement personnel.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access).
  • Strong attention to detail and high concern for data accuracy.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Resourcefulness, initiative, and good judgment essential.
  • Knowledge of the office and criminal justice system.
  • Ability to learn, update, and edit existing proprietary applications, and quickly learn and use various computer systems.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills.

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

Preferred Requirements:

  • One year criminal justice paralegal experience preferred.

Commitment:

  • Two (2) year commitment to the hiring bureau.
