Description
Position Summary:
The New York County District Attorney's Office (DANY) has two (2) openings for Victim Services Advocates in its Witness Aid Services Unit (WASU) Victim Assistance Center. In this position, the Victim Services Advocates will provide a full range of services to victims of crime. These services may include short-term crisis intervention, community referrals, orientation to the criminal justice system, case status updates, and court support. Services will be provided in different office locations, such as the Downtown Office, the Harlem Office, and/or the Washington Heights office.
 
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Conduct heavy volume of follow up calls and maintain on-going contact to ensure the clients are receiving support and services.
  • Explain criminal justice system and provide case information to victims. 
  • Assist with emergency safety planning. 
  • Act as liaison with victims and the assigned Assistant District Attorney throughout the Criminal Justice process.
  • Ensure victims, witnesses, and their families are connected with WASU concrete and therapeutic services.
  • Assist with orders of protection, supporting depositions, and registration for notification of inmate release.
  • Provide support and accompaniment during Criminal Justice proceedings.
  • Perform related administrative duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Experience working with crime victims preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of sensitivity to victim issues a must.
  • Must be able to perform under pressure in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Must be detail oriented, self-motivated, and able to multi-task.
  • Must be a dependable team player who works collaboratively and cooperatively with staff in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to follow directions and apply proper policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills required.
  • Possess strong organizational skills and ability to handle high caseload.
  • Ability to work overtime and flexible hours including holidays, evenings, and weekends.
Educational Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree required by the candidate's start date.
Preferred Requirements:
  • Written and oral Spanish fluency a plus.
  • ASL proficiency a plus.
Commitment:
  • One (1) year commitment to the hiring unit.
