Position Summary:
The New York County District Attorney's Office (DANY) has an opening for a Unit Coordinator in its Asset Forfeiture Unit. The Asset Forfeiture Unit is responsible for bringing legal actions to seize illegally-obtained and illegally used property from criminal defendants and non-criminal defendants and, when appropriate, converting this property into a form that can be used to compensate crime victims. In this position, the Unit Coordinator is responsible for providing highly-skilled supervisory, administrative and paralegal support to the unit and Office.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Responsible for coordinating with IT, personnel, fiscal, operations, space planning, and purchasing for all staffing, repairs, machine maintenance, network issues, supplies, etc.
- Assist the Unit in identifying cases with forfeiture potential.
- Send correspondence and legal documents to ADAs outside the unit to notify ADAs about forfeiture cases and assist them in forfeiting seized property.
- Track all forfeiture stipulations and court orders in database form. Create regular reports to other government agencies about property forfeited and distributed.
- Manage all reporting requests and requirements internally and externally. Respond to requests for information about forfeiture cases and distributions.
- Work closely with NYPD and other law enforcement agencies on issues related to property seizures and dispositions.
- Work closely with fiscal employees on the proper tracking and disposition of seized and forfeited property.
- Handle e-filing of court documents.
- Prepare documents for filing with civil and criminal courts.
- Create and maintain files on forfeiture cases.
- Oversee the maintenance of forfeited property and disposition of forfeited property through auctions.
- Assist ADAs with miscellaneous paralegal tasks.
- Use various investigative and informative databases to perform background and information searches, such as: eJustice, Webcrims and social media vehicles.
- Responsible for supervising and training paralegal, secretarial support staff and seasonal interns.
- Perform other administrative and paralegal duties as necessary.
Qualifications:
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills required.
- Ability to work independently with frequent interruptions, manage deadlines, and adapt to changes in workflow.
- Ability to interact with all levels of staff, witnesses, defense attorneys, and law enforcement personnel.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access).
- Strong attention to detail and high concern for data accuracy.
- Ability to work well under pressure.
- Resourcefulness, initiative, and good judgment essential.
- Ability to learn, update, and edit existing proprietary applications, and quickly learn and use various computer systems.
- Excellent troubleshooting skills.
Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
Preferred Requirements:
- Paralegal experience a plus.
- Knowledge of the New York County District Attorney’s Office and criminal justice system a plus.
- Knowledge of the office and the criminal justice system is a plus
