Position Description

The office offers college graduates a prestigious opportunity to perform public service and gain legal experience through its paralegal program. The paralegals provide critical support to the work of Assistant District Attorneys in the prosecution of crime. Each year, we receive thousands of applications for this staff position. With approximately ninety openings each year, the hiring process is very competitive.

Paralegals assist Assistant District Attorneys in all aspects of investigations, trials and appellate litigation. Paralegals compile and analyze case documents for hearings and trials; coordinate case schedules with courts, law enforcement officials, witnesses and defense attorneys. They also draft correspondence and legal documents for Assistant District Attorneys; proofread and cite check; and prepare court calendars. In addition to the above, paralegals assigned to the Appeals Bureau are responsible for writing at least one Excessive Sentence Brief a term.  The salary is $36, 084. Qualifications:

The DA's Office receives applications from a diversity of backgrounds and work experiences. The successful paralegal applicant does not fit a particular profile, except that most are recent college graduates. All majors are accepted. The office is seeking individuals who have demonstrated strong academic performance and possess superior organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Personal character, integrity, judgment, and maturity are essential.

In addition, we are interested in having a staff that is reflective of the diversity of the community we serve. Applicants with diverse backgrounds, experiences, ability, perspectives, and language skills are encouraged to apply. Fluency in foreign language, particularly Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese and Fukienese is helpful though not necessary.
