Description
Position Summary:
The New York County District Attorney's Office (DANY) has an opening for a Diversion Coordinator.  In this position the Diversion Coordinator is responsible for supporting Assistant District Attorneys (ADA) in identifying and selecting appropriate diversion programs for eligible defendants as alternatives to incarceration and detention. New York County is home to a wide range of community-based programs that provide substance abuse treatment, cognitive behavioral therapy, job development, and other services to criminal justice-involved individuals. DANY seeks to better coordinate the utilization of these diversion programs.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local community-based programs that provide a wide range of services to justice-involved individuals, including substance abuse treatment, cognitive behavioral therapy, anger management, job development and career training, and adult education, among other services.
  • Coordinate with DANY ADAs about available diversion options and make recommendations to ADAs on a case by case basis.
  • Liaise between service providers and ADAs and monitor defendant compliance and progress in programs.
  • Report on individual outcomes.
Qualifications:
  • Superior organizational, writing and communication skills, along with creative problem-solving abilities are essential; resourcefulness, initiative and good judgment essential.
  • Working knowledge of the New York City criminal justice system; previous experience working within the court system a plus.
  • Knowledge of the social service landscape in New York County.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment tools and the Risk-Need-Responsivity Model for offender assessment.
  • A strong desire to promote fairness within the criminal justice system.
  • A strong belief that rehabilitative approaches to justice involvement and addressing root causes of criminal behavior can yield positive public safety outcomes when appropriate defendants are matched with the right services.
Educational Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, public policy, public administration, criminal justice, or a related field required. Graduate-level degree in related fields preferred.
Preferred Requirements:
  • Experience working within court systems.
  • Minimum of three years of professional experience in the criminal justice and/or social services field.
Additional Requirements:
  • Two (2) year commitment to the hiring bureau.
