Description
Position Summary:
 
The New York County District Attorney's Office (DANY) has an opening for a Technology Analyst. The Technology Analyst will assist Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs) in the trial bureaus in building and enhancing complex cases and investigations, and will help with large-scale data collection, organization and analysis. 
 
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Assisting ADAs in developing long term investigations into criminal activity.
  • Palantir – performing basic searches and mapping data connections. Also organizing data for later ingestion by Palantir.
  • Mapping – using DoITT’s geocoder (GOAT) and other geocoding capabilities to map data in ArcGIS or other mapping tools.
  • Phone data – reviewing of cell phone data dumps, assisting with cell phone mapping, and having the ability to perform data mining of phone data.
  • Social Media and Communication Applications – becoming familiar with methods of communication, whether by email, text, chat, video calls, video messages, and file sharing, that is supported by various “apps,” social media sites and other services provided by Internet Service Providers (“ISPs”). Coordinating with ISPs to obtain accurate information about whether content of communications is saved on their servers. Working with ADAs to ensure preservation of such data through Letters of Preservation (“LOPs”) and providing ADAs with such information to form the basis for search warrants. Assisting ADAs in searching social media (e.g., Twitter, Instagram, Facebook) and identifying accounts belonging to targets/defendants.  Using X1 to mine social media.
  • Excel spreadsheets – writing formulas and creating pivot tables for data analysis and presentation.
  • PowerPoint – assisting in the creation of PowerPoint presentations for use in court or grand jury.
  • Serving as a liaison to the High Tech Analyst Unit (HTAU) computer forensic analysts working on the case. Assisting the ADA in interpreting and understanding forensic reports and results. Collaborating with HTAU analysts and the ADA so that the ADA can formulate clear and specific Requests for Assistance (“RFAs”) to advance an investigation.
Qualifications:
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various institutions, regulators, and law enforcement agencies to build institutional relationships
  • Strong knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, and internet search and research capability required
  • Experience using Palantir, GOAT, ArcGIS or similar mapping tools
  • Ability to quickly learn and use various computer systems is critical
  • Must possess a readiness to learn with minimal guidance and supervision
  • Excellent organization, communication, writing, and creative problem solving skills are essential; must be detail-oriented
  • A one-year commitment is required; two-year commitment preferred
