Position Summary:

The New York County District Attorney's Office has an immediate opening for a Paralegal in its Special Victims Bureau. The Special Victims Bureau oversees five units that specialize in handling cases involving special victims: the Sex Crimes Unit, Child Abuse Unit, Domestic Violence Unit, Elder Abuse Unit, and Human Trafficking Unit. The mission of the bureau is to bring order and stability to victims' lives while ensuring that their voices are heard in the criminal justice system.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Screen and investigate child abuse reports, assist ADAs, investigators, police officers, and social service & medical agencies to evaluate possible prosecution.
  • Assist Assistant District Attorneys in case preparation; attend witness interviews in Special Victims Bureau abuse cases.
  • Locate and assist witnesses.
  • Generate subpoenas; obtain evidence; conduct on-line investigations and phone record analysis in significant cases.
  • Perform related paralegal duties as assigned for ADAs in all areas of the Special Victims Bureau.
Qualifications:
  • Superior organizational, time management, writing and communication skills are essential.
  • Computer proficiency required: Microsoft Office (specifically Excel; PowerPoint); advanced knowledge of criminal justice investigative internet search techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, witnesses, defense attorneys, law enforcement agencies and community organizations to build institutional relationships a must.
  • Knowledge of the office and criminal justice system preferred.
  • Ability to learn, update and edit existing proprietary databases.
  • Ability to work under pressure required; resourcefulness, initiative and good judgment essential.
Educational Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree required; experience in the area of child abuse or domestic violence preferred.
 Preferred Qualifications:
  • American Sign Language a plus
  • Spanish speaking is required
  • Knowledge of Criminal Justice System a plus
Additional Requirements:
  • 1 year commitment to hiring bureau
